Give it a go; you know you want to

As a Journalist student using this blog to gain a sense of how to write, what to write about and to generally gain some experience I am going to bore you with this tool. I will bombard you with film reviews, books reviews, news and every now and then my opinions on life in general (this may be more often than you expect). But don't let this put you off, I'm sure you will find something of interest which will entertain and perhaps even draw a few laughs.

Getting...

... there! I'm getting used to eating fewer calories but not going hungry I think; that said I didn't get out of bed until nearly half 10 this morning so was fewer hours to my day but still. Its also going to be a short post because I may have actually found myself a job and am going to go tonight to see what its like, hence the earlier post. Here's hoping this is going to work out.

In the meantime, as I said yesterday, I decided to throw myself down the stairs on Sunday and thought I'd treat you all to a picture of my lovely bruised forearm!

Its still a bit sore!

Food Time
Breakfast
2 Warburtons Nimble slices (toasted) = 102 calories
Garlic and herb Philadelphia = 46 calories

Lunch
Due to the late get-up everything kinda merged so lunch became more of snacks-ville
Quavers = 88 calories
Weight Watchers caramel cake = 88 calories

Dinner
1/2 Linda McCartney cheese, leek and red onion plait = 235 calories
Tesco spicy wedges = 180 calories
Salad & Coleslaw = 100 calories
Tesco Everyday Value bread slice = 105 calories

Total = 944 calories

I love the fact that allow I've been awake fewer hours I managed to use more calories than usual, oops... I do blame the Linda McCartney plait, it had to be shared with the mother because I could not justify 470 calories for half of my meal!

So this is all you're getting today unfortunately as I need to be off for the evening, I will report back tomorrow night, as always to give you the low down on my day and my diet!

Today...

... has been a very long day. Its well and truly horrible when you get hungry and try to avoid overeating because you don't want to use up too many calories on a snack. Fortunately I had a plan today when this happened; I had an alternative option for tea which saved me 100 calories I could use to treat myself with (aren't I a clever girl). Finding bread with 51 calories in a slice made my day! Hello Warburtons Nimble, welcome to my diet cupboard essentials.

I know what you're thinking, why on earth didn't she just do some exercise the lazy so-and-so? Yes I know I can be lazy but after falling down the stairs yesterday I though maybe squats and weight lifts were a little bit inappropriate. So no I have a lovely bruised elbow and a sprained ankle, which I'm probably lucky is the worst of it; at the time it felt like a lot more damage than that!

Food times

While I was at my nans house today I thought it was best to get myself on the scales and double check I hadn't put on even more weight since the last time I went to the doctors. I haven't. I am still 16 stone and 2 pounds. Now I know what I weigh its time to decide how much I want to lose. I think I'd love to get down to around 11 stone, a nice healthy weight for my 5 ft 8 self.

Tonight is a night dedicated to me and taking it easy on my ridiculously sore ankle, so I have a big decision to make... what television box set do I watch?! Big, big decision.

Tonight is a girly night to myself

But the big question is, which of these box sets do I put on?!

I have a funny feeling it could be a night of Thundercats while munching my grapes. Sounds good to me!

Tomorrow will also be a day of job hunting and writing as I need to get on the ball and do something with my life. I can no longer wallow away in my self pity in my bedroom, I will find something. And hopefully having something to do will distract me from eating.

Tomorrow's post is looking thrilling already with an update on job applications and more dieting! It's like following the life of a student whose just finished their final year at uni and struggling to find a job... Oh that's right, thats exactly what this is! See you tomorrow :-)

Yesterday...

... was a very bad day for dieting, but I didn't expect it to be any different. It was birthday celebrations for my brother so it was BBQ day! The weather held out and I ate loads, but I didn't do quite as badly calorie-wise as I had expected. My downfall was alcohol, ooops. Seeing as I got in exceptionally late last night you will again be treated to two posts today, one about yesterday and todays.

But before you get the opportunity to be overly jealous about all the food I munched yesterday as promised here is the photograph of my pretty new Primark skirt. Its lovely floaty material with a short underskirt so the whole world can't see your nicnics. Added bonus, the elastic waist meant I could munch loads without feeling uncomfortable afterwards.

£12 skirt from Primark - Love it!

Food diary time!

Breakfast
Weetabix cereal bar (chocolate) = 70 calories

Lunch
BBQ party times
1 Quorn burger = 98 calories
1 Quorn sausage = 70 calories
2 buns = 280 calories
2 small jacket potatoes = 180 calories
3 cheese slices = 135 calories
Fried onions = 50 calories
Cous cous = 80 calories
Small portion of pizza = 80 calories
Small slice cheesecake = 250 calories
Calypo = 70 calories

Alcohol
2 Carling = 250 calories
2 dry white wine = 230 calories

Total = 1780 calories

So basically if I hadn't had alcoholic beverages or dessert then I would have still made it under my 1000 calorie target give or take. So all in all I am quite happy!

Watch out for this evenings blog post...

I'm back...

... just like I said I would be. Back and taking my diet seriously! So last time I went for a check up at the doctors I discovered I'd put on all the weight I'd lost and was so miffed. I hadn't realised I'd put it all back on and was trying to convince myself that I'd only put 2 stone back on, but no such luck. My next appointment is mid July so here's to getting well under 16 stone by then!

I'd like to get looking like this again, as this photo was taken after I'd lost over 2 stone last year (my shorts are too big here)

So today is the first day of a new me and here's what the new me has eaten!

Breakfast
2x Tesco Everyday Value white bread (toasted) = 210 calories
Garlic and herb Philadelphia = 46 calories

Lunch
Due to going shopping I was naughty and only snacked! But on low calorie snacks, so not too bad.
Tesco Everyday Value Onion Rings (crisps) = 70 calories
Weight Watchers caramel cake bar = 88 calories

Dinner
Homemade Quorn steak balti = 238 calories
Sweet potato (jacketed) = 172 calories
Orange juice and Sprite Zero (mix) = 22 calories

Evening Snack
To get rid of the last extra special over 100 calorie-a-pop treats I ate the last Milky Bar.
Milky Bar = 137 calories

Total Calories = 983 calories

And don't panic if you don't think I'm including my drinks! Today I only had black coffee and sugar-free-under-a-calorie pop, and very little of it. I do need to train myself into drinking more water and I will. Promise. I also did a bit of exercise, which apart from walking I have done very little of for like a year nearly (I know, I'm shocking). So today I did sit-ups for the very first time (they probably weren't very good ones but I tried) and I lifted my little girly weights, 80 reps each arm.

On the shopping front I treated myself to a lovely maxi skirt from Primark to get into the summer spirit, which makes me very happy. As I am planning on wearing it tomorrow (if the weather allows me) I shall be posting a picture for you all to see my summer find. I am going to apologise in advance if the weather is shocking tomorrow, if it is its because I bought my summer skirt, blame me!

Now to enjoy my Milky Bar while watching Saturday night TV... Casualty followed by whatever tickles my fancy on DVD.

See you tomorrow with a food diary update and photos!

The sun is...

... out and I have nothing to wear! Serves me right putting all my weight back on... after losing near enough 3 stone last year, I have spent the last year at university putting it back on. Got to love university stress and all the sitting still. But finally I have decided now that the suns out and its much warmer I don't need the stodgy comfort foods, its is now time to live on salad, pasta and cereal bars once again!

In the meantime I need to invest in something summery I can wear now, because my leggings and jumpers are just not up to scratch for this weather, so today I am going to have a gander for a skirt/dress/pair of cut-offs. Basically whichever I can find at a reasonable price and in my size. So wish me luck. I will be back later with a food log and my evaluation on how successful today has been (I can't see it being very successful at all).

I hope you're all out enjoying this weather and getting a luscious tan, which unfortunately I don't get as due to my complexion I just generally burn and get an excessive number of freckles.

Me and my ginger skin complexion... but guess what, I'm not actually ginger!

Be back later for a dietary update and any purchases of the day :-)

End of the...

... Premier League 2012-13 season.

Today saw the big finale of the 2012-13 Premier League season. Although Manchester United had already lifted the title at their last home game of the season the day still had plenty to offer football fans everywhere. From Fergie's last day as the Man Utd manager to the 36 goals scored in the 10 final matches. Had four more goals been scored today, a new league record for goals scored in a single season could have been made; this is currently at 1,066, but todays goals only took this seasons total to 1,063.

The most exciting match of the day was not one that affected table positions or relegations, but was one that saw a grand total of 10 goals being scored, a hat-trick and the retirement of a legend. And all this took place at the Hawthorns, home of my own team, West Bromwich Albion. Although Man Utd started off strong, with a 3-0 lead, the Albion pulled one back before half-time. Coming out from the break 3-1 down, Lukaku pulled back another in the 50th minute of the game. Baggies fans then witnessed goals from Van Persie (53') and Hernandez (63'), to see them go 5-2 down; at this point annihilation was feared but Lukaku scored again in the 81st minute, closely followed by a goal from Mulumbu (81'). Lukaku completed his hat-trick in the 86th minute with the Baggies equaliser.

This was Fergie's 1,500th game in charge of Man Utd and fans from both sides applauded the legend, the man that is Sir Alex Ferguson.

Six goals were also scored at Upton Park with a second hat-trick of the day coming from West Ham's number 4, Kevin Nolan. Sam Allardyce's men went on to beat relegated Reading 4-2, helping them to finish 10th in the table.

The match at the Etihad saw the home team and runners up Manchester City lose 2-3 to 11th placed Norwich. After coming back into the game twice, Man City couldn't find a third goal to equalise in the last 25 minutes of the game.

Elsewhere in the Premier League Arsenal managed to grab themselves the final Champions League position with one goal at St James' Park. Newcastle dropped to 16th following the 0-1 loss to Arsenal, which saw Koscielny (52') score the one and only goal of the match.

Arsenal's competitors for the Champions League qualifying fourth position, Spurs also managed a 1-0 win in their final game. Bale scored the only goal against 10 man Sunderland, reiterating the important role he has played for the team this season.

Already relegated Wigan managed a 2-2 draw with Aston Villa as to avoid going out on a low note. Wigan were winning 2-1 at half-time but a 61 minute equaliser from Vlaar brought Villa the point needed and the extra goal to take them above Newcastle and into 15th position.

QPR, who finished the season on 25 points were propping up the rest of the table going into their game at Anfield. QPR could not finish the season anywhere other than 20th and proceeded to lose 1-0 to Liverpool with a goal in the 23rd minute from Coutinho. Today also saw the departure of Liverpool patriot Jamie Carragher who has played for the club for 16 years in which he has played 737 games.

Chelsea finished their season in third position with a 2-1 win at home against Everton. The fans at Stamford Bridge saw Torres score his 8th goal in the league for this season. After becoming Europa League winners during the week Rafael Benitez finished his managerial run at the club on a high.

Fulham travelled to the Liberty Stadium where they beat 9th place Swansea by three goals to nil. Goals from Kacaniklic, Berbatov and Emanuelson helped Fulham to victory.

The final match of the day saw a 1-1 draw at St Mary's. Going in at half-time 0-0 the games was anybodies. Crouch cam back out to give Stoke the lead in the 47th minute, to see his efforts equaled by Southampton's Lambert in the 57th minute. The match had very little effect on the table positions as Stoke finished in 13th on 42 points and Southampton finished in 14th on 41 points.

Overview

We say farewell to a man who has been a huge part of the football scene for the last 26 years, in which he won 38 trophies, 13 of which were English Premier League titles. Thank you and farewell Sir Alex Ferguson.

Todays' matches saw the most goals ever scored on the last day of a Premier season - the most previously was 34 in 2007-08.

We also see the final rankings of the 2012-13 season in the table; Man United winners, with Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal taking Champions League positions. We also say goodbye to relegated Wigan, Reading and QPR, who were all relegated before kick off today.

We now find ourselves looking at 90 Premier League free days before the 2013-14 season begins on August 17th. Now all we can do is wait for football news, transfer news and for the first whistle of the next season to provide us with the beginning of another action packed season of entertainment.

Paralympic Athlete Branded Murderer...

... following the shooting of his partner in the early hours of Valentine's Day. South African sport star Oscar Pistorius was accused of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp but he denies that it was pre-meditated murder.

The story has been prominent in the press this week as there was the funeral of Ms Steenkamp and court proceedings began. As Oscar Pistorius is released on bail awaiting the next hearing, set for 4th June we take a look at the arguments put forward by both the defence and prosecution in the case.

What really happened?

Defence

It was described in court as being in the early hours of Valentine's Day morning when Mr Pistorius mistook his girlfriend as an intruder. He had risen from the bed to bring a fan in from the balcony area, upon his return he heard a noise in the bathroom and believed it to be an intruder. Being without his prosthetics made him feel 'extremely vulnerable' in the situation and he felt he had no time to get them on before dealing with the threat. He picked up his 9mm gun and went to the bathroom to confront the intruder while allegedly calling to his girlfriend, who he believed was still in bed, to call the police.

It is understood that the 'intruder' had hidden in the toilet, which is separated from the rest of the bathroom through another lockable door. In his panic and their being an intruder in the house and his feeling vulnerable, Pistorius shot at the intruder (in the toilet) four times, three shots of which hit his target. Once realising Ms Steenkamp was not in the bedroom  and had in fact been using the toilet he attached his prosthetics and broke into the toilet with a cricket bat, before carrying his victim downstairs where she died.

Prosecution

Many of the events brought to light by the defence were questioned by the prosecution. The only thing both parties agreed on was the number of bullets shot and the number of bullets which hit the victim. The prosecution firstly argued that a witness had heard an argument occuring in the house before the gunshots were heard and that Ms Steenkamp was actually hiding in the toilet from the defendent following the nights argument.

They also stated that although it was dark there was no way in which Oscar Pistorius could uncover the weapon from under the bed without noticing that his girlfriend was not laying there because the gun's holster was found her side of the bed; suggesting he would have to have bent down her side of the bed to locate the weapon. The angle of the shots suggest that Mr Pistorius had in fact already strapped on his prosthetics before taking shot at the toilet door, as Detective Botha testified that he thought the bullets had been fired "down" through the door into the victim.

Finally the prosecution told that there were four mobile phones which were seized at the property, none of which were used to call police or paramedics; but the defendants lawyers told the court that another phone was used to call for medical help and to contact a security guard.

Other interesting information

  • Oscar Pistorius is a sprint runner from South Africa and competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics and Summer Paralympics. He had both legs amputated below the knee when he was only 11 months old. His nickname is Blade Runner.
  • What was also interesting to discover in today's news was that his older brother, Carl Pistorius, was also facing homicide charges in South Africa over a car crash which caused the death of a female biker. It is important to note that the accident which took place in 2010 has no link with the investigation into Oscar Pistoius' case.
  • Detective Botha has recently been removed from the inquiry following the discovery that he was facing seven charges of attempted murder himself for an incident in 2011.
It will be interesting to see what happens next in the investigations and case concerning the killing of Reeva Steenkamp; and I hope that her family get to learn the truth about what happened on 14th February which led to her unfortunate death, whichever side of the story it may be.
